Beyond the Border – Vasto Trabocco Experience

Beyon the Border: Day Trips

“There is a specific blue where the sky meets the Adriatic sea in Vasto. I designed this day for you to pair the elegance of Vasto with the raw, wooden soul of the Trabocco”. Laura

Just across the border into Abruzzo lies Vasto, a town of ancient Roman roots and aristocratic grace. Your day begins with a selected private guide, wandering through the historic center, uncovering hidden courtyards and the golden stones of the Palazzo d’Avalos, built on Roman foundations and owned by one of the most influential dynasties of the Kingdom of Naples. Walking through its halls is a journey through the Renaissance and Baroque eras, where every stone whispers stories of marquises, poets, and high-society galas. But the true crescendo of the day lies below the cliffs. You will head to the shore to board a Trabucco – an ingenious, spindly wooden fishing machine perched over the sea. Here, suspended between the water and the sky, you will enjoy a relaxing lunch.

Experience Highlights

Private Guide Stroll – An insider’s tour of Vasto medieval alleys, Roman Mosaics, panoramic viewpoints, Churches and Venetian architecture as well as artisan shops and atelier.

The Architecture of the Sea – A visit to a traditional Trabocco, to learn how these “wooden spiders” have caught fish for centuries.

The Church of Saint Mary Maggiore – With the tallest bell tower and a stunning gold-leaf ceiling, the Church is home of the “Sacra Spina”, a relic believed to be thorn from Jesus’ crown, donated by Pope Pius IV to the D’Avalos Family. The Church is also home of important paintings by Veronese and Tiziano artists.

The Napolitan Garden (Optional) – A visit of the Maresca Garden where pergolas of citrus and roses, majolica-tiled walkways, and a panoramic terrace give a rare example of a cross-shaped “garden of delights”.

The Costume Collection (Optional) – A collection that is a real tribute to the traditional elegance of Abruzzo’s history.

A Lunch on the Trabocco – A slow multi-course seafood lunch, served directly on the Trabocco, paired with wines of the land.
