Blood Oranges of Sicily

Blood Oranges of Sicily

Red Oranges are the best, very different from blond ones. In fact, not all oranges are the same. The best oranges have to be perfectly balanced with a sweet-and-sour taste. The pulp has to be red. The soil and the climate have to be perfect, which means a temperature that goes from mild during the day to zero degrees at night.  Thanks to the cllimate and the soil the pigmentation process delevops the peculiar colour and taste as well as the organoleptic characteristics of the red oranges.

Sicily is the place where Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello (with a very dark flesh and stronger sour taste) oranges are produced showing the world the unique taste as well colour and encouraging healthy eating. It is in Sicily that there is a large temperature range and the soil is very peculiar thanks to the presence of Vulcano Etna.

All Tarocco oranges from Sicily – the most known variety of blood oranges –  are very rich in vitamins (an average of 70mg of vitamin C per 100 ml, which is the highest value for citrus fruit) and anthocyanins, that not only develop the red colour, but helps preventing many diseases inhibiting oxidants and free radicals.

The European Union has selected Sicily as the place for PGI Red Oranges which means  “Protected Geografical Indication” guaranting the area and the methods of production necessary to get high quality.
